Product explained

What is solid oak flooring

Solid wood flooring is a plank made entirely of one material — European oak, 20 mm thick. No layers, no plywood, no adhesives within the construction itself. This is the traditional form of parquet as it has been since the 19th century — and as it is expected to remain for generations to come.

Why does this matter? True 20-millimetre oak gives the floor maximum depth for renewal — at least 6–8 full sanding cycles and new finishes over its lifetime. That is the difference between a floor one family passes on to the next and a floor replaced every 20–30 years.

At Artistico we manufacture solid wood flooring in widths from 80 to 140 mm and lengths from 400 to 1600 mm. The oak comes from European suppliers, dried and graded in Bulgaria, and processed in our own factory in Trud. No middlemen. No import compromises.

6 key benefits

Why choose solid wood from Artistico

Solid wood is a costly investment — but chosen and installed correctly, it is also the only floor that will outlive three generations of owners.

20 mm oak from end to end

No layers, no plywood. The full thickness of the floor is genuine European oak — a material that holds its value and character over time.

Up to 6 sanding cycles over its lifetime

Complete freedom to renew — a new finish, a new colour, a new feel without replacing the floor. In practice — at least 80–100 years of service in a home.

🜨

A truly natural material

You feel the oak underfoot — warmth, texture, small natural imperfections that make the floor unique. Nothing synthetic about it.

Made in Bulgaria

Our own drying, grading and final processing in Trud. Lead time 4–6 weeks. No six-month import waits and no minimum batches.

L

Premium finish with Loba

Objective comparison

Solid vs. engineered vs. laminate

When people talk about flooring "for decades" — solid wood is the traditional classic. But not every scenario allows it. Compare the three options on the characteristics that truly matter.

Solid wood is the gold standard for longevity and renewability — but not for every scenario. With active underfloor heating, high humidity swings or planks over 180 mm, the engineered construction is often the wiser choice.

Why solid wood is different

In engineered oak flooring the construction is a "sandwich" — oak on top, plywood underneath, all bonded together. In solid wood the plank is one single piece of wood. No layers, no plywood, no adhesives within the construction itself. That simplicity is both its strength and its temperament.

1

Protective layer

Loba UV lacquer or oil (Germany). Selected to match the traffic load and the desired look.

2

Monolithic oak plank

20 mm of solid European oak from end to end. No layers at all. This is the "real" parquet in the classic sense — the way it was made before woodworking became industrialised.

3

Tongue-and-groove joint

A tongue and groove along the length of the plank — locking neighbouring planks together with no visible joints.

4

Glued-down installation

2K polyurethane adhesive + a moisture barrier underneath. No click systems, no underlay — solid wood only works glued down.

We manufacture to order for each specific project. Below are the main parameters we use to shape the specification together with you.

Oak grades — choose the character

Wood is the perfectly imperfect material. The photos show general characteristics, but every natural wood floor is a unique expression of nature. All floors, whatever the grade, will show variations in grain and character.

Standard

Standard

Puts all of oak's natural tendencies on display. Striking heartwood grain, beautiful knots and winding streaks of sapwood.

Plus

Plus

A balanced selection between a clean look and intriguing character. The universal choice — suited to both classic and contemporary projects.

Prima

Prima

A clean selection with a subdued presence. Minimal colour variation and predominantly radial grain.

Colours and tones

Natural, smoked, whitewashed, hand-patinated, dark tones. Colour matching is possible — send us a photo or a sample and we reproduce it. With solid wood, every new sanding cycle also allows a new colour — a freedom engineered flooring cannot offer in the same way.

Finishes

Natural oil (natural protection, easy to refresh), hardwax oil (more stain-resistant), UV lacquer (maximum protection). Loba systems (Germany). For solid wood we often recommend oil — easier to maintain and renew over time.

Anti-marketing

Who solid wood is NOT for

Perhaps odd for a company that sells it — but honesty builds longer-lasting trust than selling the wrong product. There are four scenarios in which we will recommend engineered oak flooring instead of solid wood:

Active underfloor heating: solid wood works, but demands a strict indoor climate (40–60% humidity year-round). Engineered oak flooring handles temperature swings considerably better.

Wide planks over 180 mm: at this width solid wood "breathes" noticeably. Engineered oak flooring stays stable up to 220–300 mm without risk.

Rooms exposed to moisture or aggressive air conditioning: offices, showrooms, spaces with frequent swings in relative humidity or temperature. Solid wood reacts to these changes.

A requirement for a clean look: if the planks need to be Prima grade to match the interior and the style of the room, we use engineered flooring. Solid wood in Prima selection costs 4X more than engineered.

"When I come to survey a site, I sometimes leave recommending engineered flooring instead of solid. It does not happen often, but it does happen. My goal is not to sell the maximum — it is to leave the client with the right floor for their life."

The process, end to end

From enquiry to finished floor — in 6 steps

A transparent process. One contractor at every stage — no middlemen and no responsibility passed around.

1

Enquiry and a few short questions

Area, preferred width (80–140 mm), grade (Standard / Plus / Prima), colour, timeline.

2

Free site visit

Measuring, assessing the subfloor, checking the moisture of the cement screed. With solid wood we pay particular attention to the room's indoor climate.

3

Samples and quote

We choose the colour and finish and prepare a sample. Then a complete quote based on the site survey. An advance payment starts the project.

4

Made-to-order production 8–12 weeks

Solid wood requires longer drying and processing than engineered. More complex colours or planks over 160 mm — up to 8 weeks.

5

Delivery and installation

Our own installation teams. Glued-down installation with 2K polyurethane and a moisture barrier — no click systems, no floating underlay.

6

Warranty and maintenance

Cleaning recommendations and an annual check-up when needed.

Frequently asked questions

What everyone asks

If something is missing — write to us and we will add the answer to this page.

Solid wood is one plank of one material — 20 mm of pure oak. Engineered oak flooring is a "sandwich" — 4 mm of oak on birch plywood. Solid wood is more temperamental with underfloor heating and wide planks; engineered is more stable in those cases.

At 20 mm thickness — at least 6, usually 8 full sanding cycles. After the last one, around 12–14 mm of wood remains, which is still a working floor. In practice, in a home a floor is sanded every 15–20 years, so solid wood is calculated for 100+ years of service.

Technically — yes, but it requires a strict indoor climate (40–60% relative humidity year-round) and controlled heating. In practice, if you have an active underfloor heating system, we recommend engineered oak flooring as the more stable choice. See the "Who solid wood is NOT for" section above.

Depending on the grade, solid wood ranges from 30–60% cheaper than engineered up to 400% more expensive. We prepare an exact quote after a site survey — the price depends on the width, the grade and the finish.

Yes, with the right finish — UV lacquer or hardwax oil — and prompt attention to spills. Solid wood in a kitchen looks great and is practically durable with proper care. It is only unsuitable for bathrooms and rooms with constant moisture.

Typically 4–6 weeks — solid wood requires longer drying than engineered. More complex colours, wider planks (over 160 mm) or large-scale projects — up to 8 weeks.

For homes we usually recommend natural or hardwax oil — easy to refresh over the years without a full sanding. For commercial sites and high-traffic rooms — UV lacquer for maximum protection.

A warranty on the planks, a warranty on the lacquer/oil per the Loba system, and a warranty on the installation. The exact terms are stated in the quote.
