The whole field is made up of identical leaf-shaped pieces — each one bounded by two opposing S-curves. The rows run diagonally and each next one is offset by half a leaf, so that the tip enters the curve of its neighbour. There is not a single straight cut — we cut on a curve across the whole area and every piece sits only in its own place. The photograph shows walnut, but the wood is not locked: the same pattern comes out in a lighter and in a darker reading. It works in large rooms, where the floor is seen whole.
