A diagonal lattice of a double line runs over the oak field — a light ash stringer set against a dark walnut thread. Where the lines cross, we tie them into square knots, and at the centre of each diamond stands a four-rayed star divided in half: one side ash, the other walnut. The thin bands carry the whole drawing, so they are cut last and matched for grain. The combination in the photograph is one of many — we change any of the three woods without touching the geometry.
