The oak is the quiet field over which a vine with bunches of grapes winds. The leaves are walnut with their veins cut out, three thin wenge stringers hold the band straight, and the grapes are hundreds of separate cherry circles. The leaves run out past the stringers and lie on the field — that is where the feeling comes from that the vine is creeping across the floor. The four woods are shown in one reading; we replace any of them for a softer or a denser result, and the pattern stays.
