The band is quiet: a smooth oak field held tight between two thin wenge stringers. The work is in the corner — a spray of acanthus curls cut to a hair's breadth. Wenge gives the darkest scrolls, doussie — the red ones, walnut holds the middle tones, ash puts in the light tips. Five woods in about eighty separate pieces on a single corner. The combination is not locked — we change any of the five, and the pattern of the scrolls stays the same.
