Eight acanthus branches run out from a small ring at the centre and open out all the way to the edge. The pattern is in two woods: ash is the light field, doussie cuts the leaves, the scrolls and the outer frame — the contrast carries the whole figure. The two are not locked in: a softer or a sharper reading is made simply by changing the wood, the cutting stays as it is. It reads well on both a dark and a light floor.
