A real chessboard in the floor — 64 squares, the letters A–H at the top and bottom, the numbers 1–8 down the sides. The corners are finished with a meander. Ash gives the light squares and the band of the frame, wenge — the dark ones, the markings and the Greek key. The two woods are not compulsory: we cut the board in another contrast as well, softer or sharper, without touching the grid. Its place is in a study, a library or a club area.
